An advocate by the name of Amritpal Singh Khalsa has addressed a letter to the Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana to take suo moto cognisance of the riots that happened at Jahangirpuri in Delhi on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti celebration. The letter further urges the top court to institute a court monitored investigation into the incident.
The letter states that the recent riots which erupted in Jahangpuri area in North-West Delhi are a scar on the face of the Constitution. It states that this is the second time that riots have erupted in Delhi in two years, and in both occasions, members of the minority community are only to be blamed.
According to the letter, the lawyer has stated that "it has emerged that few armed members, who were part of the Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra procession entered mosque and installed a saffron flag, and stone pelting by the members of both the communities ensued".
It states that in the entire incident, Delhi Police Personnel and civilians were severely injured and private property was damaged.
According to the letter, “These riots are already a communal scar, to make it even worse, Delhi Police, initially arrested 7 youths all of them being Muslims.”
The letter further states that Delhi Police investigation so far, has been partial, communal and is directly shielding perpetrators of the riots. The letter states that the Supreme Court admonished Delhi Police in their failure to stop riots in 2020. It further states that the role of Delhi Police in 2020 riots have belittled them and have weakened the faith of the people in them.
The author of the letter states that “With this letter I beseech your lordships attention in exercising epistolary jurisdiction, thereby constituting a committee headed by Sitting judge of this Court, to conduct impartial probe into Jahangirpuri riots.” It further states “atleast, the scar as the instant one is somewhat remedied.”
