The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, Egmore today granted bail to 32 Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists who were arrested while protesting in front of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin's residence seeking justice for 'Lavanya', who took her own life allegedly after being forced to convert.
Last Monday, ABVP activists had staged a protest against Chief Minister Stalin for allegedly being insensitive in the Lavanya suicide case.
The ABVP on Thursday had demanded the release of activists so arrested.
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on 31st January, 2022 had ordered the transfer of the Lavanya death case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In its judgment the High Court had expounded multiple circumstances to arrive at the conclusion that the "investigation is not proceeding on the right lines" and that it was the Court's duty to render posthumous justice to the child.
After the Tamil Nadu government, through its DGP, challenged validity of the order of the High Court, the Supreme Court had recently refused to interfere in the Madras High Court order transferring investigation into 17-year old Thanjavur girl’s (Lavanya) alleged forceful conversion & suicide case to CBI.
