"Citizens entitled to know what goes on in Court”: Justice Chandrachud bats for live-streaming of court proceedings

Justice DY Chandrachud while speaking at an event said that live-streaming rules have been formulated so that cases can be live-streamed, as every citizen has the basic right of knowing what happens in the Courts.

Justice Chandrachud was addressing at the Inaugural Function of the Annex Building of the Bombay High Court, Bench at Aurangabad.

He said that the High Court of Judicature at Bombay, Delhi High Court, Allahabad High Court, Telangana High Court, and Madhya Pradesh High Court will lead the 5 pilot projects for digitization across the Country.

Justice Chandrachud said, "hearing before a court can be live-streamed for the rest of the country because I do believe our citizens are entitled to know what goes on in the Court, they are entitled to know why cases are adjourned, they are entitled to know whether Judges sit from the morning till evening in deciding the cases it is the basic right of the citizens to know."

"We are looking at data privacy, we have provided for access to the differently-abled for people who will not be able to see or hear so that they can access our website," he added.

It was also said that "finally, under the inter-operable criminal justice system, we are linking every aspect of the administration of criminal justice namely the prisons, the Courts, the Police Stations, and the Forensic Science Laboratories." 

Over the initiation of the digitization process and E-Filling system Justice Chandrachud said that "we propose to digitize as many as 3100 crore documents across India, but digitization must go hand in hand with E-Filling otherwise if we don't have E-Filling 5 years down the line we'll be digitizing the old record once again."

"The Government is the largest litigant in India, I have written to all the Chief Justices of the High Court recently that by January 2022 all the cases of the Government of India and the State Governments must be E-filled in our district judiciary and the High Courts. Let the Government of India and the State Governments make that beginning," he added.
